Gretchen Farrar is currently accepting a limited number of voice students in Eugene, Oregon based on audition/consultation. Her teaching method is based on her work with W. Stephen Smith with whom she studied in New York City. Her teaching philosophy invites the student to set aside expectations of one's own voice, to commit to a process of learning and regular intentional practice, and to realize one's potential as a singer with the understanding that singing is a dynamic, ever-changing experience and one of the most powerful means of artistic and human expression. She welcomes students of all levels and ages who are interested in experiencing the emotive potential of their voices through a healthy, classically based approach to singing.
As a teaching artist for the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Gretchen Farrar led outreach in elementary and middle schools in Queens, the Bronx, and Westchester, New York. As a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon, she taught individual and class voice to undergraduates. Gretchen has been Assistant Director for Elysium-Between Two Continents' International Summer Academy in Bernried, Germany, where she also coached aspiring professional singers in acting, German diction, and career building.
